How it all began…

Adam Darby, MD and Doug Polster, PhD met on fellowship at UCLA BrainSPORT, a sports concussion clinic that helps athletes recover from brain injury, and immediately connected over their passion for brain health and exercise. Dr. Adam completed a dual fellowship in sports concussion and behavioral neurology while Dr. Doug completed his in sports neuropsychology.

After completing their training, which included intensive study on how exercise positively effects the brain, the two joined forces to create a training program that combined physical exercise and cognitive training. It started small and local. They used rubber mats printed with shapes and numbers and worked with a Parkinson’s Disease group to create a cognitively challenging physical exercise program. As the interest picked up, they knew they were on to something.

Recognizing the potential of their program and how it could help thousands more, they spent the next 2 years creating the perfect program to get people more physically and cognitively healthy, no matter what age.

Finally - the name. They wanted something unique but something that represented the program. It was Dr. Doug’s dad that brought up the Greek concept of ‘arete,’ meaning the quality of excellence, striving to be one’s best, reaching one’s highest potential of body and mind. What better word to describe the program?! So they created their own version, and the name aratrain was born.
